Sandy Beach

Introduction

Sandy Beach, on the southeast windward coast of Oahu near Honolulu, is a hidden cove beloved by locals and surfers. Unlike tourist-thronged Waikiki, Sandy Beach preserves a more pristine, local vibe, with broad golden sand cradled by volcanic rocky headlands where waves break in white froth, a natural surfing and boogie-boarding playground. Its most famous residents are Hawaiian monk seals that regularly haul out on the sand to rest, one of the world most endangered marine mammals and Sandy Beach most precious natural wonder. The Makapuu Lighthouse trail at the north end offers a panoramic coastal walk, while the south end looks toward Rabbit and Turtle Islands. The park is well-equipped with free parking, showers, picnic tables, and lifeguards. Summer brings gentle surf for family swimming, winter brings larger waves for surfers. At sunset, golden light shimmers on the sea, and strolling locals and dog-walking families form a serene tableau of Hawaiian life.
