Introduction
Washington Place is an important historic building in downtown Honolulu. Built in 1846 in Colonial Revival style, it was Queen Liliuokalani's private residence during the Hawaiian Kingdom and is now the governor's mansion — witnessing Hawaii's tumultuous history from independent kingdom to US state. Built in 1846 by American merchant John Dominis, the name honors George Washington. During the Hawaiian Kingdom, it was an important social and political venue; Queen Liliuokalani lived here for years. After the 1893 overthrow, it became an official US building.
