Introduction
The United States Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, overlooks the Pentagon and Washington, D.C., and is the only national memorial dedicated to the Air Force and space power. Three 88-meter curved stainless steel spires soar skyward, called the Bomb Burst, symbolizing the daring and sacrifice of pilots streaking into the heavens. Designed by James Ingo Freed and dedicated in 2006, it is a sculptural and spiritual masterpiece among contemporary American memorials. The site also includes a Parade of Honor, glass remembrance walls, and a welcome center engraved with the names of air campaigns and the fallen. At sunset the spires glow gold-red in the fading light, making this one of Washington's most solemnly beautiful off-the-beaten-path memorials.
