Introduction
The Smithsonian National Zoological Park, located within Rock Creek Park in northwest Washington, D.C., spans 163 acres and is the only national zoo under the Smithsonian Institution that offers free admission to the public. The zoo houses over 2,700 animals representing more than 400 species, with the most popular attraction being the giant panda family, as it is one of only three zoos in the United States where visitors can see giant pandas. Built on hilly terrain, the zoo is divided into themed areas including the Asia Trail, African Region, Amazonia Science Gallery, and Small Mammal House, where natural woodlands complement carefully designed enclosures. The zoo also houses a Conservation Biology Research Center dedicated to endangered species research and breeding, allowing visitors to learn about wildlife conservation science and global cooperation while observing animals.
