Introduction
The United States Botanic Garden sits at the foot of Capitol Hill in Washington, one of North America's oldest continuously operating botanic gardens, established by Congress in 1820 and now more than two centuries old. The garden comprises the Conservatory and Bartholdi Park. The 1933 aluminum-and-glass Conservatory simulates habitats from tropical rainforest to desert and from Hawaii to the Caribbean, with more than 65,000 plants. Most captivating are the rare and endangered plant room, orchid room and collection of primitive cycads, some of which are extinct in the wild and survive only here. Bartholdi Park showcases practical plant combinations for American home gardens, centered on the Bartholdi Fountain, one of Washington's oldest continuously running fountains.
