Introduction
Founded in 1980, the National Building Museum documents and celebrates American achievements in architecture, engineering and design. The building itself is a treasure, designed by General Montgomery C. Meigs and completed in 1887 as the Pension Bureau for Civil War veterans. Its Great Hall is famed for colossal Corinthian columns of red brick rising 23 meters, often called Washington's most magnificent interior space. Permanent exhibits trace the evolution of the capital, green building and residential design, while rotating shows address contemporary architectural questions. The hall floor is sometimes transformed into mini-golf or a maze, drawing families on weekends and pilgrims from the design professions year-round.
