Introduction
The National Museum of African Art is the Smithsonian's only national museum dedicated to African art, founded in 1964 by diplomat Warren Robbins in a Capitol Hill townhouse and moved to its underground National Mall home in 1987. Its holdings exceed 14,000 objects spanning ancient sculpture, masks, ceramics, textiles, and contemporary painting and photography from the sixth century BCE to the twenty-first century. Daylight enters through a circular dome, connecting to the Enid A. Haupt Garden, where contemporary African sculptures echo the indoor exhibits. Permanent galleries follow the thread African Voices, weaving West, Central, East, and Southern Africa into a plural narrative of the continent as both cradle of civilization and contemporary art frontier.
