Introduction

The Hirshhorn Museum is the Smithsonian's national museum of modern and contemporary art, established in 1966 when businessman Joseph Hirshhorn donated his vast modern art collection to the nation. The building itself is a massive artwork, a "donut" shaped cylindrical form designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft in 1974, the hollow elevated cylinder unique among the classical architecture of the Capitol and National Mall. The collection holds over 12,000 modern and contemporary works spanning from Picasso and Matisse to Warhol and Koons, with permanent and temporary exhibitions presenting global art movements from the 19th century to today. The surrounding sculpture garden displays over 60 outdoor sculptures including Rodin's "Thinker" and Yoko Ono's "Wish Tree", Washington's most elegant outdoor art space.
