Art Museum of the Americas
Introduction
The Art Museum of the Americas, affiliated with the Organization of American States, is the only museum worldwide dedicated to art of the Western Hemisphere from pre-Columbian to contemporary. Housed in a 1912 Colonial Revival building by architect Albert L. Richardson, itself a historic landmark, the collection holds over 2,000 paintings, sculptures, installations and folk art objects from across the Americas, spanning Mexican muralism, Caribbean modernism, and Andean indigenous art. Permanent works include pieces by Latin American masters Fernando Botero, Wifredo Lam and Joan Miró, while temporary exhibitions address contemporary social issues. Though modest in size, its curatorial density and unique perspective of the Americas as a cultural whole make it a quietly brilliant gem among Washington's museum landscape.
