Introduction

The Eisenhower Executive Office Building is one of the most ornate structures in the White House complex, immediately west of the West Wing, built between 1871 and 1888. Designed by Alfred Mullett in the Second Empire style, the facade is densely decorated with columnar orders, statuary and mansard dormers, with four stories of red and gray stone presenting a dignified French courtly air in sunlight. Originally shared by the State, War and Navy departments, it now houses the President's Executive Office and senior White House staff. The exterior is a favorite subject for photographers in Washington, offering a striking contrast to the White House and a window into the federal architectural heritage.
