Introduction
The Corcoran Gallery of Art was once Washington's oldest private art museum, founded in 1869 with a bequest from William Corcoran. The building began as a neoclassical structure and was later expanded into a grand palace facing the White House. The collection was known for American art and European painting, with works by Degas, Monet, Homer and Sargent. In 2014, financial difficulties forced the collection to be distributed between the National Gallery of Art and George Washington University, and the building was absorbed by the Treasury Department. Although the independent institution no longer exists, its holdings remain on free public display in the Corcoran galleries of the National Gallery, continuing Corcoran's vision of bringing art to the people and representing an important chapter in Washington's art history.
