Introduction

The Phillips Collection is America's first museum of modern art, opened to the public in 1921 by collector Duncan Phillips. Housed in the Phillips family home, its intimate room-style galleries create a warm viewing experience quite unlike the grand halls of traditional museums. The collection spans European and American art from Impressionism to the present, including masterpieces such as Renoir's "Luncheon of the Boating Party", van Gogh's "First Self-Portrait", and works by Cezanne, Matisse, O'Keeffe and Rothko.
