Calvary Baptist Church has served midtown Manhattan for over 170 years, founded in 1847. Its first sanctuary stood on West 23rd Street before the congregation moved in 1883-84 to West 57th Street, where a red-sandstone Gothic Revival church by John Rochester Thomas was built and called by Time magazine 'the most expensive Baptist church in America,' bearing above its doors the inscription 'We preach Christ crucified.'
