Introduction

Completed in 1993 to a design by Hiroshi Hara, the Umeda Sky Building joins two towers at the top with a circular platform and is the most recognisable silhouette in Osaka. The 'Floating Garden Observatory' is no garden at all but three levels of 39F, 40F and the roof: from the 3F departure gate a lift reaches the 35th floor, then a transparent escalator suspended between the towers climbs to the 39F ticket desk, and that escalator is itself the famous photo spot. The 40th floor is an indoor gallery where cafe SKY 40 runs a 35-metre glass counter; one floor up, the open-air roof deck sits 173 metres above the ground with a full 360-degree view over the city, the Yodo River and towards Awaji Island. The name evokes being in a garden of sky and city rather than describing planting; the roof opens in rain but umbrellas are banned there and high winds can close it. Admission is JPY 2,000 for adults and JPY 500 for ages four to primary school, while the Osaka Amazing Pass gives free entry before 15:00, which is why it features on so many one-day itineraries. In the basement, Takimi-koji reconstructs a Showa-era Osaka street indoors, with ramen, kushikatsu and old shop signs packed together, a good place to eat after the night view; the Koji Kinutani Sky Art Museum in the same complex has a separate ticket.
