Introduction

Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1936 on the former Chausuyama estate donated by the Sumitomo family; Chuta Ito's neoclassical colonnade is still the most dignified building in Tennoji Park. After a two-and-a-half-year renovation it reopened on 1 March 2025, with brighter galleries and a clearer route while keeping the pre-war central hall and corridors. Its 8,000-plus works are anchored by the Chinese painting and calligraphy collection of Osaka merchant Abe Fusajiro, a coherent run from Song and Yuan landscape to Ming and Qing literati art, alongside Japanese screen paintings and tea utensils, Buddhist sculpture from Asuka to Kamakura, and lacquer and metalwork. The collection show costs just JPY 300, with special exhibitions priced separately. A side door leads into Tennoji Park, with Shitenno-ji to the north and Tsutenkaku and Shinsekai to the south, making an easy half-day cultural walk.
