Introduction

Kema Sakuranomiya is not a walled garden but 4.2 kilometres of riverbank along the Okawa, the old Yodo River, running from the Kema weir down to Temmabashi Bridge. Some 4,800 Somei-Yoshino, mountain and sato cherry trees line both banks and bloom together from late March into early April, turning the river into a corridor of blossom and making this one of Osaka's most popular hanami spots. Across the water stand the early-Meiji Osaka Mint and the Senpukan reception hall; from Sakuranomiya Bridge the branches, water and old brickwork stack into one frame. After dark, street lamps give a quieter night view than Osaka Castle draws. The park is free and open around the clock, and outside cherry season it stays a fine riverside route for running, cycling and dog walking.
