Introduction

Namba Shrine sits among the office blocks of Bakuromachi, its vermilion gate and covered corridor shutting out the traffic of central Osaka. The site is traditionally linked to Emperor Nintoku's Naniwa Takatsu Palace, which makes it one of the city's oldest places of worship. It enshrines Okuninushi and Sukunahikona, and people come to pray for business prosperity and recovery from illness. The main hall is plain shinmei-zukuri, the grounds are shaded by old trees, and at lunchtime local office workers drop in to sit for a while. The high point of the year is the July Naniwa-no-Miya festival, when a mikoshi and costumed procession circle the surrounding streets and stalls sell takoyaki and okonomiyaki. Do not confuse it with Namba Yasaka Shrine, famous for its giant lion-head stage, about two kilometres away.
