Introduction

Pontocho is a narrow lane, some 500 metres north to south, pressed between the Kamo River and Kiyamachi-dori in Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto — one of the city's five geisha quarters (hanamachi). It took shape after the 1712 Kamo River flood works, when inns for boatmen and travellers sprang up near Shin-Kawaramachi-dori, growing into a hanamachi by the late Edo era. Bengara-lattice townhouse facades, the 'tsujiko' side lanes and the early-Showa Pontocho Kaburenjo hall at the north end define the streetscape; the Kamogawa Odori dances by geiko and maiko run each May, and from May to late September the restaurants on the river side raise noryo-yuka terraces over the Kamo, serving Kyoto cuisine over the sound of water — the classic Kyoto summer night, lanterns glowing after dark.
