Introduction

Opened in 1997 as Japan's first museum built specifically for children, Kids Plaza Osaka occupies a blue-glass block beside Ogimachi Park. Shuhei Endo designed the building, but what children remember is Kids Town, the enormous climbing structure by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser filling the atrium between the fourth and fifth floors. Not a straight line anywhere: undulating floors, tilted columns, coloured spirals and tunnels stack up so you can enter on the fourth floor and slide out on the fifth, and it is the undisputed centre of the museum. The first floor holds the entrance and tickets, the third creative workshops, the fourth Kids Town and everyday-life play, and the fifth science, where your shadow stays on the wall after you move, you can stand inside a giant soap bubble, pedal a bicycle to light a lamp and read the news in a mock TV studio with playback. Current admission is JPY 1,500 from age 16, JPY 800 for ages 6-15, JPY 500 for ages 3-5 and JPY 700 for over 65s; hours 09:30-17:00 with last entry 16:15, closed the second and third Mondays and over New Year. Weekends and school holidays bring queues for the climbing structure, while weekday afternoons after two are quietest once school groups leave. Same-day re-entry from the 3F exit is allowed with your ticket, so local families often step out to Ogimachi Park at midday and come back.
