Introduction

Important: the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka is closed for renovation until around April 2027 according to its official notice, so it cannot be visited at present and should not be built into an itinerary. Founded by Osaka City in November 1982, it exists because twenty-one Sumitomo group companies donated the celebrated Ataka Collection to the city, later joined by a major gift of Korean and Chinese ceramics from Dr Ri Byong-Chang. The holdings number about 5,700 objects, including two National Treasures — an oil-spot tenmoku tea bowl and a celadon vase with iron-brown spots — plus thirteen Important Cultural Properties such as the blue-and-white jar with lotus pond and fish. Its East Asian ceramic collection is ranked among the world's finest, displayed in naturally lit galleries that let glazes shift in soft daylight. The museum occupies a corner of Nakanoshima Park just east of the red-brick Osaka City Central Public Hall, on the same walking route as the National Museum of Art, the Nakanoshima Museum of Art and the prefectural library. Before closure it opened 9:30-17:00 with last entry 16:30, closing Mondays, year-end and during exhibition changes, charging adults JPY 1600 and high school or university students JPY 800. Once it reopens, check the new exhibition schedule for current prices and days.
