Introduction

The Kyoto Imperial Palace sits in the heart of Kyoto, enclosed by the spacious public green belt known as the Kyoto Gyoen. From 1331 until the capital moved to Tokyo in 1868 it served as the residence and political centre of the Japanese imperial family. The palace preserves representative structures rebuilt in 1855 — the Shishin-den (Ceremonial Hall) and Seiryō-den among them — executed in the restrained, elegant shinden-zukuri style, with white-sand courtyards and pine plantings that convey the quiet dignity of a royal residence. The surrounding Gyoen is a metropolitan oasis where citizens walk, jog and view cherry blossoms through the seasons. Today most of the grounds are open as a park and visitors can freely wander its tree-lined paths; to enter the halls themselves you must book in advance through the Imperial Household Agency or join an official guided tour to learn the rituals and spatial order of a thousand-year-old court.
