Introduction

Kishiwada Castle stands in the Senshu district of southern Osaka Prefecture, guarding the southern approach to Osaka Castle through the Edo period. Its founding is uncertain — one tradition dates it to 1334 under Wada Takai, while firmer records describe a Matsuura stronghold in the mid-16th century. In 1585 Ode Hideyoshi's uncle Koide Hidemasa took over, rebuilt the main bailey and raised a five-storey keep; from 1640 the Okabe clan held the castle for thirteen generations until the Meiji Restoration. Lightning destroyed the keep in 1827, and the present three-storey reconstruction dates from 1954, housing local-history exhibits and a top-floor lookout over the city. What gives this compact castle national standing is the dry landscape garden in front of it: Mirei Shigemori's Hachijin-no-Niwa composes stone groups after Zhuge Liang's Eight Formations and is designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty. The Edo-period stone walls and moats survive, and the site is listed among Japan's Continued 100 Fine Castles. Cherries line the moat from late March into early April, while the Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri, held since 1703, turns the town upside down each September.
