Introduction
The National Museum of Art, Osaka stands on Nakanoshima, having moved from Expo Memorial Park in 2004 to an almost entirely underground building whose only above-ground sign is a vast steel frame evoking a bamboo grove, designed by Cesar Pelli. Its collection centres on Japanese and international art after 1945, numbering some 8,200 works — one of Japan's largest holdings of contemporary art — shown in rotating thematic collection displays alongside major touring exhibitions. Three basement levels of tall concrete galleries put the busy city a stair away, and together with the neighbouring Nakanoshima Museum of Art it forms the island's art twin core.
