Introduction

Nakanoshima is a long, narrow sandbank some three kilometres from west to east, held between the Dojimagawa and Tosaborigawa rivers and concentrating Osaka's identity as a city of water. At its eastern end, Nakanoshima Park opened in 1891 as Osaka's first municipal park and stretches 1.5 kilometres along the water; its rose garden holds about 310 varieties and 3,700 bushes, peaking from early May to early June and again from late October to mid-November. Heading west, the 1918 Osaka City Central Public Hall, a red-brick neo-Renaissance landmark designed by Okada Shinichiro and funded by Iwamoto Einosuke, is a designated Important Cultural Property, while the 1904 Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library offers a neoclassical counterpoint. The 2022 Nakanoshima Museum of Art joined the National Museum of Art, the Museum of Oriental Ceramics and the Osaka Science Museum to form one of the city's densest museum strips. Park and river walks are free around the clock: the stroll from Yodoyabashi to Kitahama unfolds brick, water, roses and a black modernist cube in sequence, while winter's Osaka Festival of Light brings illuminations and projections around the Public Hall.
