Introduction

Katsuo-ji is an ancient temple in the hills of northern Osaka's Minoh district, the 23rd stop on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage and for over thirteen centuries the temple of winning fortune. Tradition traces its name to a title granted after prayers healed an emperor, later altered to its present form; since then examinees, job seekers, athletes and anyone hoping for a turn of luck have climbed to its gates. What made the place famous well beyond pilgrimage circles is the sea of red victory daruma: a worshipper takes one home with a wish and returns it when the wish comes true, so eaves, stone steps, railings and forest paths are layered with daruma of every size, each standing for someone's effort. The temple's daruma fortunes hide the paper slip inside a doll as well. Grounds cover 240,000 square metres of slopes and stairs linking the halls, with distinct seasonal planting; autumn turns the surrounding woods entirely red, making this one of Kansai's noted maple spots, with evening illuminations on select dates. Photography is allowed outdoors but not inside the main hall. The terrain is steep, so allow 1.5 to 2 hours and wear good shoes.
