Introduction

Katsura Imperial Villa was created in the early 17th century by Prince Toshihito of the Hachijo-no-miya line and completed by his son Toshitada; renamed an imperial villa in 1883, it is managed by the Imperial Household Agency. Three shoin buildings step back diagonally from the pond in a 'flying geese' formation, with four tea houses scattered for different seasons and views. Stepping stones are deliberately set at awkward intervals to make you look down, then a turn opens the whole vista — the repeated contraction and release is the essence of a stroll garden. In 1933 Bruno Taut praised it as the equal of any Western classic, and modernists read it as proof Japan had reached the same conclusions three centuries earlier. ★ Note: Katsura is **not** among the component properties of the UNESCO 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto' listing; as Imperial Household Agency property it is visit-by-guided-tour only, restricted to ages 18+ with no interior access.
