Introduction
Enkō-ji is a Rinzai temple in Ichijōji, Sakyo, Kyoto, founded in 1601 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who also established a school here and a base for Japan's earliest movable-type 'Fushimi edition' printing, with wood type preserved today. Famous for its dry garden 'Jūgyū no niwa' and autumn maples, the view from the study is rated among Kyoto's finest foliage compositions, lovely in fresh green and snow too; with Manshu-in and Shisendō on an Ichijōji maple route.
