Introduction

The Osaka Culturarium at Tempozan stands at the western end of Tempozan Harbor Village in a Tadao Ando concrete building. It opened in 1994 as the Suntory Museum Tempozan; Suntory withdrew in 2010, the city took it over, and it was renamed in 2013. It is a geometric concrete volume with no permanent collection or general admission: the year is organised around temporary exhibitions, concerts and performances, most often Japanese instruments and taiko, with a 180-centimetre drum alongside shamisen, shakuhachi and shinobue, and chances for the audience to try the instruments on stage. The Tempozan Harbor Theatre in the same complex runs that programme. The fifth floor holds a separate paid sweets museum showing packaging and advertising from Osaka confectionery companies such as Glico. For visitors it works best as an add-on after the aquarium, a five-minute walk from Osakako station with the Kaiyukan, the Ferris wheel and Market Place all in the same circuit; between exhibitions you can still see Ando's geometric massing and the seaward terrace from outside. Because each show is ticketed separately, check the programme first and only slot it into the day when something is actually on.
