Introduction

The Kyoto International Manga Museum opened in 2006, jointly run by Kyoto City and Kyoto Seika University, in a former elementary school (Tatsuike), Japan's first museum-library dedicated to manga. Its holdings reach 300,000 items; the headline is the floor-to-ceiling 'Manga Wall' of free-reading volumes from the Taisho era to 2005 award winners. With the 'What is Manga' permanent show, a red-pine phoenix (Hi no Tori) sculpture, a manga studio and paper-theatre, it is a Kyoto pilgrimage for fans since opening.
