Introduction

Shugakuin Imperial Villa is the mountain retreat built in the 1650s by the retired Emperor Go-Mizunoo at the western foot of Mt Hiei. Across some 540,000 sq m, three 'ochaya' complexes — upper, middle and lower — are linked by pine-lined paths with working rice paddies between them: folding real agriculture into an imperial garden is its most original gesture. The upper villa's Yokuryuchi pond was formed by damming a valley stream, crossed by the Chinese-roofed Chitose Bridge; from the highest tea house, Rinkuntei, the whole of Kyoto opens out with Mt Hiei and Mt Atago layered behind — a peak of Japanese 'borrowed scenery'. ★ Note: like Katsura, it is managed by the Imperial Household Agency and is **not** part of the UNESCO 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto' listing. Entry is free but requires a booked guided tour, ages 18+ only, 80 minutes over a 3 km path.
