Introduction
The Tennoji Station Front Police Box is nicknamed Zo-san Koban, the Elephant Police Box, and even Osaka's official tourism guide lists it as a tiny landmark. It stands directly outside Abenchika exit 4 of JR Tennoji, by the entrance to Tennoji Park. Because the zoo is close by, the little building was shaped like an elephant: from the front a trunk-like form hangs between two round windows that read as eyes, while from the side the outline of ears appears. It works from several angles, and first-time visitors often take a moment to realise it is a police box. This is a functioning koban staffed around the clock, with a duty room and a local map inside, not a tourist information desk, viewing deck or rest space. View it from the pavement only; five to ten minutes and a photograph are enough, and do not push the door or block the entrance. As a standalone destination it would disappoint, but placed between Tennoji Park, the zoo and Abeno Harukas it becomes exactly what it is: a street-corner detail that makes people smile, especially children. It is free and visible at all hours, with the outline clearest under night lighting; step back onto the park-side pavement for a safer angle away from the traffic.
