Introduction

Kōzu Shrine (Kōzu-no-miya) in Kōzu, Chūō, Osaka, was founded in 866 by imperial order on the Naniwa Kōzu Palace site linked to Emperor Nintoku, enshrining him. Toyotomi Hideyoshi moved the deity here in 1583 when building Osaka Castle; the hall burned in WWII and was rebuilt after. As the stage of the rakugo 'Kōzu no Tomi', it was the cultural heart of Osaka townspeople, with famous linked pines; a 5-minute walk from Tanimachi 9-chome, a rare ancient shrine in the city centre.
