Introduction
Gojo Ohashi carries Gojo-dori across the Kamo River in Kyoto; the present bridge dates from 1959. The Heian-period Gojo Bridge, which stood near today's Matsubara Bridge, is famed as the spot where the warrior-monk Benkei met Ushiwakamaru (Minamoto no Yoshitsune), and stone statues of the pair stand at the bridge's west end. Views take in the river and the Higashiyama hills.
