Introduction
Ikasuri Shrine, affectionately called 'sama', is the beloved tutelary shrine of Osaka's Semba district, the first shrine of Settsu Province and a former imperial-funded shrine. Its origins go back to Empress Jingu enshrining the Ikasuri deity on Tanabeshima by the Yodo River after returning from Silla; the Engishiki lists it as the only great shrine in Nishinari county. Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered a move when he built Osaka Castle in 1582, and in the Kanei era it settled here — the old place-name Watanabe came with it, making this the birthplace of the Watanabe surname. Blessings cover the home, safe travel and easy childbirth, and a Manyoshu poem asks the shrine for protection before a journey. The hall burned in 1945 and was rebuilt in concrete to its pre-war form, now quiet among office towers.
