Introduction

Jakko-in is a Tendai nunnery in Ohara, Kyoto, where, after the Battle of Dan-no-ura, Kenreimon-in — mother of Emperor Antoku — is said to have lived in retirement praying for the Taira clan, tying it closely to the Tale of the Heike. A stone path leads to the hondo, the Pond of Tei, a bell tower and the hermitage ruins; autumn maples frame the steps in quiet beauty. The old hondo burned and was rebuilt in 2005, the image restored from the damaged one as a Jizo — a place to feel impermanence and seclusion.
