Introduction

Oe Shrine (Oyosami Jinja) in Niwai, Sumiyoshi-ku, is the shikinaisha listed in the Engishiki as 'four seats of Oe Shrine' in Sumiyoshi county, Settsu Province — a Myojin Taisha second only to Sumiyoshi Taisha in local standing. Tradition says Yosa no Abiko no Otarimi prayed here to the Sumiyoshi deities and his ancestor TakeToyohazurawake no Mikoto for victory during Empress Jingu's Korean campaign, after which his clan served as priests. The shrine guarded the ancient Yosami Pond, a vast artificial reservoir appearing twice in the Kojiki and lost after the Yamato River diversion of 1704. Deities include Okuninushi, Tsukuyomi, Emperor Suinin, Itsutakeru and the three Sumiyoshi gods. Small and almost tourist-free, it remains a living neighbourhood shrine where goshuin are available.
