불국사

Introduction

Bulguksa is a grand, solemn thousand-year temple in Gyeongju, a masterpiece of Silla Buddhist art and a World Cultural Heritage site. On the slopes of Mount Toham, it is among Korea's most famous and magnificent ancient temples, the pinnacle of Silla-era Buddhist art and architecture, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in the Silla era (rebuilt after war damage), it crystallizes Silla's devout faith and craftsmanship. Its treasures are the national-treasure stoneworks: the two famous pagodas—Seokgatap (simple, balanced, elegant) and Dabotap (ornate, unique)—facing each other in different styles, both pinnacles of Korean stone-pagoda art; plus the beautiful stone stair-bridge (Cheongungyo, Baegungyo, etc., also national treasures) and the solemn Daeungjeon hall. The temple harmonizes nature, antique halls and exquisite stone art—beautiful and Zen-like, especially in spring cherry and autumn maple.
