Introduction

Bukchon Hanok Village is a simple, elegant traditional hanok district in Seoul, set between two ancient palaces, a quaint and elegant sight in the city. Bukchon Hanok Village sits on a hillside between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces in central Seoul, a simple, elegant traditional hanok (Korean home) district, perfect for feeling the old capital's charm. Bukchon was once a high-end residential area for Joseon nobles (yangban), prized for its location between the two palaces; to this day it preserves a large number of simple, elegant traditional hanok, one of the most concentrated and beautiful hanok areas in Seoul. Wandering its winding hillside alleys, you see simple, elegant hanok with the iconic graceful black tiled roofs (slightly upturned eaves), wooden frames and enclosing walls, simple, elegant and beautiful, preserving Joseon's traditional home style. From some high slopes you can see the black tiled roofs spreading and interweaving with the modern Seoul skyline, simple and unique. Many hanok are still homes or have become elegant teahouses, workshops, shops and guesthouses.
