Introduction

Cactus Island (Isla Incahuasi) is a rocky islet rising from the center of the Uyuni Salt Flat, covered with tall, ancient giant cacti that contrast sharply with the endless white salt—and climbing it gives a sweeping view of the salt flat. Scattered across the vast white salt plain are rocky islets (remnants of ancient lake islands or reefs); Cactus Island is the most famous. On this rock grow dense, tall, upright giant columnar cacti—slow-growing, many centuries to over a thousand years old, over ten meters tall, ancient and gnarled. A green rocky island of ancient cacti, isolated in the endless white salt, makes a striking, unique sight. Climbing it, you see the ancient cacti up close and from its heights take in the vast white salt flat—open and stunning. Note altitude sickness. Admire the island and the salt panorama.
