Cementerio de Trenes

Introduction

The Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes) lies just outside Uyuni town in Bolivia's Potosí department — a rusting graveyard of steam locomotives on the altiplano. In the late 19th century this was a railway hub linking mines to the coast; as mining declined and a storm wrecked the rolling stock, trains were abandoned to the highland wind and sand, slowly merging with cacti, salt crust and red earth. Today the rusted carriages, overturned wheels and bare steel frames form a surreal industrial-ruin aesthetic under the ~3,670 m sun — a classic photo and sunset stop on the Uyuni salt-flat journey, and a witness to Bolivia's mining and railway rise and fall.
