Introduction
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro (Catedral de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, also 'Ladder Church') is the city's Catholic cathedral, completed in 1976 and famed for its rare conical form — a 75 m high, 106 m diameter reinforced-concrete 'inverted cone' ringed by four 64 m stained-glass windows. Light pours from the top and the panes ascend like a ladder toward the dome, giving Chinese visitors its 'ladder church' nickname. It replaced the old downtown church, seats about 20,000, and its minimalist modernist lines against kaleidoscopic light make it a landmark of Latin American modern religious architecture and a must-see in central Rio.
