Introduction

The Catedral de Sal lies buried about 180 metres underground in Zipaquira, 50 km north of Bogota — Colombia's first wonder. Rebuilt in 1995 inside old salt-mine galleries, the 120-metre nave holds thousands of worshippers beneath a 16-metre central cross, while smaller crystalline crosses line the walkways, glowing cold and strange in the half-light. The route strings together the fourteen Stations of the Cross in side chapels, salt rock flashing translucent or deep red as the lighting shifts. Above ground, a salt park adds a brine lake, mining exhibits and lookouts. Sunday mass is held here for thousands — a unique meeting point of architecture, faith and mining history.
