The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá lies about 50 km north of Bogotá, carved 180 metres underground inside a disused halite mine. Visitors descend into a vast network of tunnels where fourteen chapels, life-size crosses and a huge central nave have been sculpted directly from rock salt. Dim lighting and mineral crystals give the chambers a mystical, cathedral-like glow. Renovated and reopened in 1995, the site also features a salt lake, viewpoints and a mining museum within Parque de la Sal.

Sipaquí-Zipaquirá is mild year-round, but the drier months of December–March and June–September are best for a visit; April–May and October–November bring frequent showers. Spend half a day to a day at the Salt Cathedral: a 1–2 hour bus or car ride from Bogotá, a cable car or walk up the salt mountain, tunnels and the great cross glowing among salt crystals — then browse the old-town plaza and salted sweets before returning.
