Introduction
The Rock Church is Helsinki's unique, astonishing church—carved into solid natural rock, with a copper roof and raw rock walls, famed for its ingenious design and superb acoustics, a not-to-be-missed Helsinki sight. Completed in the late 20th century, it is carved into a huge granite rock in the city center. The designers hollowed the rock to form the church space, like a hall hidden in stone. Inside, the four walls are the rough, raw excavated rock; the roof is a warm copper dome of coiled copper wire, with a ring skylight between dome and wall letting natural light softly fall on the rough walls—a unique, quiet, solemn, natural, modern space.
