Helsinki Cathedral is Finland's capital's most famous, iconic landmark—a white, green-domed Neoclassical church atop Senate Square, outlining Helsinki's skyline, the undisputed symbol of the 'Daughter of the Baltic.' Built in the mid-19th century, a grand Neoclassical (Greek Revival) Lutheran church atop Senate Square, the most harmonious, classic cityscape. All white, with a tall portico of Corinthian columns and a great green central dome ringed by four smaller ones—the most iconic on the skyline. The white exterior against blue sky is very photogenic (especially in sun or at first light). Inside is plain, bright, solemn. The high steps and square are a popular gathering spot. Uspenski Cathedral is Helsinki's grand, beautiful Orthodox church—the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe, a red-brick and golden-dome church on a seaside peninsula, witnessing Finland's Eastern (Russian) ties, a unique and splendid Helsinki landmark. Built in the late 19th century (under Russian rule), it is a magnificent Russian Byzantine-style Orthodox cathedral and the largest in Western Europe. On a seaside height of the Katajanokka Peninsula, it is striking. Its signature: deep-red brick with shining golden onion domes (one great central dome ringed by smaller ones), red and gold glowing in the sun—a strong Russian Orthodox flavor, contrasting with Helsinki's white Neoclassical buildings like Helsinki Cathedral. Inside are Orthodox icons, murals, gold and candlelight—solemn and mysterious. The seaside height also offers views of the city and harbor. Seurasaari is a small island about five kilometres northwest of central Helsinki, reached by a footbridge from the mainland. Since 1909 more than eighty old wooden buildings - farmsteads, cottages and a church dating back to the seventeenth century - have been moved here from across Finland. A shoreline loop trail links the houses, squirrels beg shamelessly, and the Midsummer bonfire celebration each June is the island's biggest event of the year.

The Rock Church is Helsinki's unique, astonishing church—carved into solid natural rock, with a copper roof and raw rock walls, famed for its ingenious design and superb acoustics, a not-to-be-missed Helsinki sight. Completed in the late 20th century, it is carved into a huge granite rock in the city center. The designers hollowed the rock to form the church space, like a hall hidden in stone. Inside, the four walls are the rough, raw excavated rock; the roof is a warm copper dome of coiled copper wire, with a ring skylight between dome and wall letting natural light softly fall on the rough walls—a unique, quiet, solemn, natural, modern space.
