Introduction

Seurasaari is a small island about five kilometres northwest of central Helsinki, reached by a footbridge from the mainland. Since 1909 more than eighty old wooden buildings - farmsteads, cottages and a church dating back to the seventeenth century - have been moved here from across Finland. A shoreline loop trail links the houses, squirrels beg shamelessly, and the Midsummer bonfire celebration each June is the island's biggest event of the year.
