Introduction
The Canal du Midi runs east from the Toulouse area and was cut in the 17th century to link the Atlantic with the Mediterranean, regarded as one of the great civil engineering works of the modern era and now a World Heritage Site along its full length. The Toulouse stretch runs along the north of the city, lined with plane trees that form a green tunnel, with walking and cycling paths along the bank — a daily haunt for locals out for a stroll, run or ride. The locks, gates and bridges survive intact and boats still pass through. Linking the city with the river port and industrial relics, it is ideal for an easy riverside walk or cycle that shows Toulouse's slower side.
