Introduction
Varlaam is the second-largest monastery of Meteora, set on the summit of a rock pillar about 370 metres high. Founded in the fourteenth century by the hermit Varlaam and rebuilt in the sixteenth, its main church was completed in 1548 with frescoes by the renowned painter Frangos Katelanos. Inside are a museum, a wine cellar and a cistern, and relics of the rope basket and windlass once used to haul supplies. Reaching the top involves a flight of rock-cut steps. The terrace looks over Kalambaka and the surrounding pillars. Allow about an hour, minding dress and hours.
