📍 Destination Overview
Rising over the Thessalian plain, Meteora's sandstone pinnacles are crowned by Orthodox monasteries, Europe's most dramatic religious landscape. Fourteenth-century monks climbed by rope to build them, once twenty-four, six opening today. Byzantine murals and woodcarvings honour Orthodox art here, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose silhouettes at sunset are iconic.

No.1 Meteora
Great Meteoron Monastery
The Great Meteoron is the largest of the Meteora monasteries, perched atop a giant sandstone pillar above the Kalambaka plain, founded in the 14th century by St Athanasius as an aerial sanctuary for hermit monks. Inside survive a grand church, frescoes, and the old kitchen, wine cellar and herbal pharmacy; a museum holds religious objects and manuscripts. Reached by hundreds of stone steps, it looks down through the clouds over deep gorges — the most epic frame of the 'sky cities' and the spiritual core of this UNESCO site.
Church & Religious Site

Moni Agias Triados
Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) is among the most isolated and photogenic Meteora monasteries, built in the 15th century on a slender sandstone pillar, reached by about 140 rock-cut steps — a filming site for Bond's 'For Your Eyes Only'. Its small church is known for fine frescoes and a quiet courtyard; on every side lie gorges and sea of clouds, the ultimate expression of Meteora's detached solitude. Smaller than Great Meteoron, it feels even more secluded and vertiginous.
