Introduction
The Palace of Knossos lies on a hill about 5 km southeast of Heraklion and is the largest surviving complex of the Minoan civilisation. Excavated from 1900 by Arthur Evans, it preserves the Throne Room, the Queen's Megaron, the Grand Staircase and vivid frescoes such as the Bull-Leaping and the Prince of the Lilies. Its maze of corridors and light wells inspired the myth of the Minotaur's labyrinth. Allow about two hours, and pair it with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where the original frescoes are displayed.
✨ Highlights
01
Throne Room
The best-preserved Minoan ceremonial hall, ringed by the gypsum throne and griffin frescoes at the heart of the site.
02
Minoan Frescoes
Paintings such as the Bull-Leaping and Prince of the Lilies evoke Bronze Age court life; originals are mostly in the Heraklion museum.
03
Grand Staircase
Multiple flights link the upper and lower palace, while light wells brought air and daylight into the deepest rooms.
04
Labyrinth Layout
More than a thousand rooms joined by winding corridors are widely thought to have inspired the myth of the Minotaur's labyrinth.
